This past Thursday D. Scott Foster, a senior at the College, announced his candidacy for the Williamsburg City Council election on May 4. His announcement makes him the first candidate to enter the race and his campaign organization has already raised more than $7,000, the most by a Williamsburg council candidate in recent history. William and Mary's Career Center offers many services to undergraduates, graduates, and alumni. Unfortunately, many students miss out on the help and advice offered because they simply know nothing about it. Currently located in the basement of Blow Hall, the Career Center helps students to, "develop the skills needed to clarify and ultimately achieve career goals," said Mary Schilling, director of the Career Center. As students spend their spring semester scrambling to secure housing for the following year, they will find that the once-promising opportunity of hotel leasing is no longer on the table. On January 14th, the Williamsburg City Council voted unanimously to reject an ordinance that would allow students to reside indefinitely in hotels anywhere in the city. (0) comments
William and Mary basketball has seen unparalleled success so far this season, highlighted by road wins at two traditional ACC powerhouses (Maryland and Wake Forest). In the darkness of 6 AM last Tuesday, 38 students boarded a bus headed for the state capital. The annual "Road to Richmond" trek promised to provide the eager students an opportunity to wander the halls of the Virginia General Assembly and discuss the potential impact of key legislation facing the College with legislators. Dining Services began their new food waste collection and composting program on Monday, cutting down the amount of waste from dining facilities by up to forty percent. This initiative arose through collaboration between Aramark Food Services and COS (Committee on Sustainability), who purchased the compost collecting bins used on campus. (0) comments
This month the College began offering a marine science minor for undergraduate students featuring classes taught by W&M faculty from VIMS (Virginia Institute for Marine Science). The minor will initially be a 3-year pilot program limited to only 20 students a year and will have eighteen required credit hours. (0) comments
Approximately 45 W&M students spent Martin Luther King Day in Petersburg, Virginia participating in community service projects created in partnership with the non-profits Habitat for Humanity, ElderHomes, and Pathways. SPICE (Students' Petersburg Initiative for Community Engagement) and the Office of Community Engagement and Scholarship's Branch Out program was created last year to provide service opportunities with an integral learning component. The College has merged two departments, the Web Communications team in IT and the Office of Publications, to create the Office of Creative Services. W&M Law School Lee Professor William W. Van Alstyne and seven other constitutional law scholars have signed an amicus curiae brief in the Supreme Court case McDonald v. Chicago. Van Alstyne's brief supports the Second Amendment's right to bear arms against state and local governments. (0) comments
