I must confess to being biased against musical theater, for too often I find its song and dance alienates me from any narrative or emotional nuance. Sinfonicron Light Opera Company's production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers handily avoids these pitfalls, for this light-as-a-feather comedy seeks to do little more than entertain and does so admirably. An extraordinary cast with undoubtedly high expectations in the world of film, Nine was to be the film of the year. Directed by Rob Marshall, Nine is the film version of a Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was based on legendary Italian director Federico Fellini's landmark 1963 autobiographical film 8 ½. I was disappointed that Zola Jesus' The Spoils was largely ignored last month when the critics were compiling their year-end lists, but I understood. Really, the last thing indie rock needs right now is more boys and girls recording skuzzy, lo-fi solo projects from their dorm rooms -- on a surface-level that's exactly what Zola Jesus is. Many of us listen to classical music while we study, be it Bach, Beethoven, or Mozart, as a way to focus and relax while doing work. Supposedly there is something to do with rhythm that makes us think well, or at least study harder. I started off with a Pandora station set to one of the old masters of classical music and stumbled upon a hidden gem: Zoe Keating, a contemporary classical composer and musician. (0) comments

I fly a lot. Most people complain about layovers in uncomfortable airports, but I appreciate my hours spent in New York City's JFK airport. I enjoy watching the multitudes that walk the terminal. I find myself wondering where they are going, where they're coming from, what their stories are, what inspires them. (0) comments

When a friend gave me a copy of The Lovely Bones to read when it first came out, I was skeptical. I'd heard the basic plot line, and I figured it would be too upsetting. Then, when Good Morning America chose it for their book club, I was even more resistant. (0) comments
