On August 4, Democratic Governor Tim Kaine announced three new appointees to the College's Board of Visitors, each with a strong background in management, finance, and fundraising. Bill Lawrence ('90), the creator and executive producer of the hit comedy-drama Scrubs, will visit William and Mary on October 3-5 under the joint sponsorship of The Virginia Informer and UCAB. During his time as an undergraduate student, Lawrence earned his BA in English and was a member of the social fraternity Kappa Alpha. (0) comments

With only 1,380 available spots in the incoming class of 2012 and a record 11,600 received applications, the admissions process this year was especially competitive. Following the overwhelming results of a student referendum on laundry services, the eSuds free laundry program is almost fully installed at the College. Residence Life Director of Housing Operations Chris Durden has been working for the past 15 months to ensure that the program will be up and running by the fall semester. (1) comment

Dr. James Hansen, NASA climatologist and major figure in the debate on global climate change, recently refused a paid invitation to speak and debate at the College about his positions on global warming. Fire strikes local Williamsburg condo complex

On July 22, sometime after 6 pm, fire erupted at a condominium complex near campus. The fire occurred at the Woodlands condo subdivision near the intersection of Jamestown Road and Route 199. In a conversation with The Informer, Williamsburg Fire Department Captain Chuck White explained that there was "significant fire damage to the two upstairs units" of the four-unit building, "the roof collapsed. Free speech advocate proposes significant changes to College's code

Braum Katz ('10), Student Assembly Undersecretary of Student Rights for Free Speech Advocacy, is actively trying to protect First Amendment Rights at William and Mary by turning the College from a "Red Light" into a "Green Light" university. A very prestigious designation awarded by FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education), a green light denotes campus policies regarding freedom of speech that are in accordance with the Constitution, Supreme Court decisions and other laws. At the 2008 commencement ceremony, Board of Visitors Rector Michael K. Powell announced that the University Center will be renamed the Sadler Center, honoring retiring Vice President for Affairs W. Samuel Sadler ('64, MEd '71). The University Center, or the UC, functions as the largest multi-purpose center on campus, housing the College's second-largest auditorium, the UC Commonwealth, and a student dining hall, among other things. The Williamsburg Redevelopment & Housing Authority

On March 9, 2006, the Williamsburg City Council unanimously approved allocating up to $310,000 of city funds in a loan to the Williamsburg Redevelopment and Housing Authority (WRHA) for the acquisition of 110 Harrison Avenue. The WRHA is non-profit public agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia, separate from the city council, which seeks to provide affordable housing to low and middle income individuals and families. Upon court order, the College administration must provide the Recording Industry Association of America with the names of 20 William and Mary students who have allegedly downloaded illegal music. This ruling comes as the result of Norfolk federal Judge F. Bradford Stillman granting a subpoena request from the RIAA on appeal; another judge, now retired, originally refused to grant the request. On Sunday, May 11, a packed Kaplan Area bid farewell to the William and Mary Class of 2008 in the College's 315th commencement. Interim President W. Taylor Reveley III began the ceremony by recognizing attending members of the Board of Visitors and faculty and commencement ushers, Economics Professor Clyde Haulman, Government Professor Mitchell Reiss and Vice President for Student Affairs W. The College hosted a debate in the Wren Great Hall on Thursday, April 10, for the six candidates running for Williamsburg City Council . The council hopefuls squared off on a variety of local issues, all while playing to a newly empowered demographic in the city: the College's students. (0) comments

The Office of Health Education, in conjunction with Health Outreach Peer Educators (HOPE), has launched a survey aimed at assessing the current method of condom distribution on campus. The Health Center currently offers free condoms at the FISH bowl in the Campus Center and at the Health Center itself. (1) comment

In late February, post office staff discovered another employee going through student mail in search of valuables such as cash and gift cards. In the April 18 issue of The Flat Hat a front page story alleged widespread theft may be taking place at the campus post office. (0) comments

W&M movie channel airs censored movie

On April 6, the William and Mary movie channel hosted the popular comedy Beerfest. The movie, as displayed on the movie channel, was not edited for sexual content, language or violence. Instead, what was edited was a single, short joke at the end of the movie. (0) comments

Mearsheimer speaks on the

On April 7 at the University Center, International Relations students had the opportunity to hear renowned scholar Dr. John J. Mearsheimer speak for over two hours and also sign copies of his controversial new book, The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy. Many Americans do not realize how much support America gives to Israel. (0) comments

On April 9, the William and Mary Students for Life sponsored a discussion by pharmacist Neil Noesen on the use of emergency contraception (EC). EC, or "morning after pill," was discussed in the context of its physiological effects on women. Mr. Noesen is a licensed doctor of pharmacy who works at a hospital in Chicago. (0) comments

According to Facilities Planning, Design and Construction, construction on both the new Integrated Science Center (ISC) and the new business school are still on schedule and should be completed by their projected finish dates. Construction of the ISC, which is joining Rogers Hall, home to the Chemistry department, to Millington Hall, home to the Psychology and Biology departments, began in January 2006. (1) comment

Community initiative at Sentara Hospital shut down

SA Senate has longest meeting of the year

Last week's Student Assembly Senate meeting resulted in quite an uproar. Among the issues covered was a bill appropriating $10,000 for a green roof on top of Sentara hospital, which donated the land where the new school of education will be built. The proposal was introduced by Scott Morris ('10), a former senator, Director of Support Operations Don West, Head of Facilities Maintenance Bob Leak, Director of Public Relations Kim van Sickle -- all except Mr. (1) comment

The College held a short inauguration ceremony on April 8 for members of the Student Assembly elected to office in the March 20 general election. Newly elected SA President Valerie Hopkins ('09) and Vice President Zachary Pilchen ('09), along with SA officers from the classes of 2009, 2010 and 2011 stood in the Wren chapel and took the Student Assembly oath. O'Connor to deliver law school's commencement address Sandra Day O'Connor, retired US Supreme Court Justice and Chancellor of the College of William and Mary, will deliver the commencement address at the Law School's graduation ceremony on Sunday, May 11, 2008; approximately 220 law students will receive degrees during the ceremony.
