57K Unused by Counseling Center Despite 2 Suicides

Last year, the SA allocated $57,000 to the Counseling Center for the hiring of a mental health counselor. The allocation was in response to two student suicides during the spring semester. It was largest one-time allocation in the SA's history. But as of September 5, two weeks into the school year, a mental health counselor has not been hired.

Abstentee landlords accused of negligence

The Neighborhood Relations Committee hosted its first open forum on August 30 in the Williamsburg Community Building. The committee consists of five panel members who were brought together last year to foster better communication and relationships between the city, the college, students, neighbors and landlords.

Tribe football loses 27-23 to UMass

AMHERST, MASS-beneath the grey skies of a New England September, the fourth ranked Tribe (0-1, 0-1) fell to the University of Massachusetts Minutemen (1-0, 1-0); short of victory, and well short of this season's high expectations. In a seesaw battle that marked fifth-year senior quarterback Mike Callahan's first starting performance, UMass's relentless rushing attack proved too much for the Tribe to overcome.

Freshmen Election Preparations Stalled at the Onset

The Student Assembly is getting off to a late start with its work on the Freshmen Election. Currently set for September 23rd, the election has key leaders within the SA scrambling to assemble an Election Commission and settle on an electronic ballot forum.

Celebrity intellectual and notable atheist Christopher Hitchens to speak at the College

The 318th Student Assembly Senate has really set a strong precedent for marathon-length weekly sessions. After over two and a half hours of debate and voting, the August 31 SA meeting finally adjourned, much to the relief of all involved. The first bill passed on Tuesday was SB 318-028 A Big Time Speaker for a Big Time School Act, which will bring Christopher Hitchens to come speak on campus in the near future.

Unhoused and overflow students confined to motel

The College of William and Mary now offers and advertises the Governor's Inn as an off-campus housing option for transfer students and students on the waiting-list. Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, Director of Residence Life, Deb Boykin stated that the Governor's Inn was not used as an off-campus housing option until three years ago.
